Oztober: Bloodlust (1991)
Four Melbourne vampire slackers party all night, tear throats out at an industrial club, and rob a casino for three million bucks, with a gang of pilgrim-costumed vampire hunters and two beer-drinking cops on their tail. They also really love gas station snacks.
Co-director Richard Wollstonecraft was 21 and learned filmmaking from the Savage brothers of The Marauders. The money came from “cowboys and borderline gangsters,” and the lead actress went on trial mid-shoot for importing 2,000 tabs of ecstasy. Wollstonecraft later became Richard Masters, ran Melbourne’s Hellfire fetish club, and started his own film festival out of spite.
The poster said it was banned in seven countries. It wasn’t.
PLUS: What We’ve Been Watching, an Australia vs. America burger-jingle Battle of the Bands, and a feature presentation with Matt, Jeremiah, C-bear, and CDR.
